Interview with Vic Fuentes

Hey, how’s it going?

Fabulous! Just on the bus on our way to Vegas for our last day off on the tour.

How is the Vans Warped Tour this year?

Best tour we’ve ever been on! This is our second time on the tour, so we were well prepared going into the tour. It’s been amazing playing new songs and seeing the kid’s reactions to the new album.

Which bands have you been hanging out with on tour?

We have a lot of friends on the tour this year. We hang a lot with Breathe Carolina, Four Year Strong, Bring Me The Horizon, Emarosa and You Me At Six.

Awesome. So, you’re playing songs from your new album ‘Selfish Machines’?

Yes, we are playing 3 new songs: “The Boy Who Could Fly,” “Caraphernelia” and “The Sky Under The Sea.”

What’s the meaning behind the title ‘Selfish Machines’?

It is about human nature and our natural tendencies to want, love, and take things. It’s about getting in touch with the animal-like qualities that we all have inside us.

Let’s talk a little about the songs from the new album. What’s the story behind “I Don’t Care If You’re Contagious”?

I wrote that song after reading a message from a young fan. She told me that her boyfriend had just died and that the first time he ever held her hand was during one of our songs. She wanted to thank us for bringing them together. I wrote the song for her. It’s about her boyfriend telling her that he is ok and he still loves her.

Wow. “Stay Away From My Friends” seems to reveal a different side of Pierce The Veil, what sparked this song?

It seems like every time I break up with someone they try to take all my friends. It sucks because your friends are the people you need the most when you are in pain.

Next month you and the band will be heading down to Australia for the Take Action Tour. How did Pierce The Veil get involved in this charitable event and have you toured Australia before?

Well, the tour actually just started out as a normal headlining tour for Attack Attack! and then Take Action wanted to get behind it. We are all excited that the tour will now be for a good cause.

That’s great. Tell us about the side projects within the band. Is Pierce The Veil going to be put on pause sometime in the future?

We will never put Pierce The Veil on pause because it is our life, but we try to do side projects in between tours and on our breaks to expand our horizons and try new things. Mike and I are involved in a “supergroup” project called Isles & Glaciers with a bunch of other bands, Jaime does solo stuff on his own and Mike and Jaime have a hip-hop side project called MikeyWhiskeyHands.

We try to collaborate as much as possible because you learn so many new things working with other artists. Plus the finished product is always interesting and different.

Thanks! Pleasure speaking with you.

You too! Thanks!
