Interview with August Burns Red

Earlier this month, before heading overseas with The Devil Wears Prada and Veil of Maya, August Burns Red took center stage at Long Island, NY’s new buzzed-about concert venue, The Paramount. Standing below a gigantic black banner adorned with their name in white letters, which coincidentally matched vocalist Jake Luhrs’ sleeveless shirt, the band kicked off their headlining set with “Composure,” a track from 2007’s ‘Messengers.’ You wouldn’t necessarily believe it by the way they carry themselves offstage, but shrouded in an array of gleaming lights, the five members of August Burns Red are metalcore titans, and the amount of people on the circle pit-infested floor of any of their concerts could easily contest naysayers. Playing songs from all four of their studio albums, including last year’s critically acclaimed release ‘Leveler,’ the group brought a mark of sophistication and thrill to the show that night.

August Burns Red can be counted on when it comes to three things: putting on a kick-ass show, constructing solid metal albums, and recording catchy Christmas covers. Ever since the Pennsylvania-based metallers tackled “Carol of the Bells” five years ago, fans have eagerly awaited the arrival of new holiday covers each winter. This year, the quintet went above and beyond, releasing a full-length of both original and traditional Christmas songs. In stores now, ‘Sleddin’ Hill, A Holiday Album’ is filled with adventurous renditions of classics like “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” as well as redolent originals like “Flurries” and “Sleddin’ Hill.” Former US President Calvin Coolidge once said, “Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind.” It seems like August Burns Red might agree. Amongst the twinkling sleigh bells on the album, the group continues to showcase their musical prowess, making it a fun present for any metal fan in need of having their spirits lifted.

On the last night of their latest North American tour, guitarists JB Brubaker and Brent Rambler answered our questions about their holiday album, favorite Christmas desserts, and future plans. Check it out below.
