Founding bassist of Big Star, Andy Hummel, passed away at the age of 59 on Monday, July 19, 2010 at his home in Fort Worth, Texas.
Andy Hummel had been battling with cancer for several years, but it didn’t stop him from playing the Alex Chilton tribute show during SXSW in Austin, Texas. The performance marked the first time in 35 years that Hummel had performed with Big Star. Despite not rejoining the band during their random reunions, Hummel will always be remembered for his contributions to the Big Star legacy.
Four months ago, Big Star lost their founding lead singer Alex Chilton, also at the tender age of 59. And, in 1978, at age 27, founding singer/guitarist Chris Bell lost his life in a car crash. Jody Stephens (drummer) is the last remaining founding member.
