New Tinariwen Album to Feature Members of TV on the Radio and Wilco

Tuareg rockers Tinariwen have announced their fifth studio album, ‘Tassili,’ due out August 30 on Anti-. Appearing on the record are TV on the Radio members Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

The North African nomads are reportedly unplugging for this album, choosing to play only acoustic guitars and unamplified percussion rather than the electrified guitar sound that they have become known for. According to a statement on Anti-‘s website, the new album “reaches deep into the essence of Tinariwen’s sound while simultaneously opening itself to the surrounding world.” Any electric guitar which does appear on the album will have been handled by Cline.

The musical collective of Tinariwen has been around since 1979, when founding member Ibrahim Ag Alhabib got his first acoustic guitar. Though the electric guitar style that the band has become known for bears many similarities to American blues rock, it is said to be primarily based upon West African and North African music, including Berber music, Malian music such as that by Ali Farka Touré, and traditional Tuareg melodies and rhythms.

Tinariwen will tour extensively this year — see below for dates.
