Mikael Åkerfeldt, Steven Wilson Unveil New Project

Progressive rockers Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth, Bloodbath) and Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree, Blackfield) have announced a new project, tentatively titled “Storm Corrosion.” The duo’s debut album “should definitely be out in early 2012,” according to Wilson.

“[It’s] very orchestral, lots of strings, lots of guitars and vocals, too,” continued Wilson in a fall 2010 interview with Roadrunner Records UK. “Lots of very long songs that kind of go in different directions that you don’t necessarily expect them to go in — almost theatrical in a way.”

The project originally included former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, but in an interview with Classic Rock Magazine, Åkerfeldt said, “To be honest, there’s just no room for drums on what we’ve done so far.”

Åkerfeldt and Wilson have previously collaborated a number of times. Wilson produced Opeth’s albums ‘Blackwater Park,’ ‘Deliverance,’ and ‘Damnation,’ while Åkerfeldt has appeared on several Porcupine Tree songs.
