Flaming Lips: Heady Nuggs, 2011 Tour Dates and New 12-Part Video

The Flaming Lips have begun 2011 with an onslaught of activity.

‘Heady Nuggs: The First 5 Warner Bros. Records 1992 – 2002’ will be a 5-LP box set which contains reissues of ‘Hit To Death In The Future Head’ (1992), ‘Transmissions From The Satellite Heart’ (1993), ‘Clouds Taste Metallic’ (1995), ‘The Soft Bulletin’ (1999), and ‘Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots’ (2002). 1997’s ‘Zaireeka’ is not included, so perhaps the set should be called “The First 3 Warner Bros. Records, Plus The 5th And 6th Ones Too” — reissuing an album on vinyl which was originally meant to be played on 4 CD players simultaneously wouldn’t really make much sense, so people will probably forgive them the inaccuracy.

‘Heady Nuggs’ will come in a “Standard Edition” which features the aforementioned albums on black 140-gram vinyl, and a “Special Limited Edition” which features the same 5 albums but on colored vinyl, each one a different color. The “Special Limited Edition” will only be made available through their official web store. Both editions will be released on Record Store Day, April 16.

The Flaming Lips have also unveiled the latest in a long line of experimental/interactive/polyphonic sound pieces, “Two Blobs Fucking.” “Two Blobs Fucking” is a song and video broken into 12 parts, intended to be played simultaneously on 12 smartphones (although 12 computers could theoretically work as well). Here to explain further are The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd:

If the logistics of that seem too daunting, the folks over at Salon.com have edited together a mix of the video. It’s heady stuff no matter how you slice it.

Finally, there are a smattering of dates around the world where you can see The Flaming Lips perform live this year.
