Big Star’s third album, ‘Third/Sister Lovers,’ is being reissued on vinyl for Record Store Day.
Omnivore Recordings is pressing 2,000 copies of ‘Third [Test Pressing Edition]’ on 180-gram vinyl. Due out on April 16, the package will include replicas of the original tape box, tracking and lead sheets, and a mastering card. The new pressing is cut from the same assembly reel and on the same lathe at Memphis’ Ardent Studios as it was when it was first pressed. Original mastering engineers Larry Nix and John Fry will be in charge of the pressing once again. Five copies of the original test pressings signed by Big Star’s Jody Stephens, Nix and Fry will be available at random retail locations worldwide.
The seminal power-pop group’s final studio record has been alternately lauded and maligned over the years. ‘Third’ was as commercially unsuccessful as every other Big Star record; it also featured a wider variety of instrumentation and experimentation than any Big Star album prior. Many artists have professed their affection for ‘Third’ in the years since. The album was recently performed in its entirety by an all-star cast, including Jody Stephens. Stephens is the only living original member of Big Star.
