Led Zeppelin drummer John “Bonzo” Bonham posthumously continues to be one of the most inspirational drummers to rockers everywhere. 30 years after the alcohol-induced asphyxiation that ultimately led to Bonham’s death, rock drummers will be honoring “Bonzo” with an explosive concert, “Bonzo: The Groove Remains the Same” at the Key Club in West Hollywood on September 25, 2010.
“Not a day goes by where I don’t think of John Bonham’s snare sound,” co-organizer Brian Tichy said. “I thought of all the drummers I know that worship at the alter of John Bonham and being in L.A., there are so many here.”
The playbill just added Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), Abe Laboriel (Paul McCartney), and Bobby Blotzer (Ratt) to the already brilliant lineup that would have made Bonzo proud. Bonzo’s protégés that are set to be honoring him include Steven Adler (Guns N’ Roses, Adler’s Appetite), Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell), Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp, John Fogerty, Smashing Pumpkins), Frankie Banali (Quiet Riot), Fred Coury (Cinderella), Jimmy D’Anda (BulletBoys), James Kottak (Scorpion), Khurt Maier (Salty Dog), Chris Slade (AC/DC, The Firm), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chickenfoot), Brian Tichy (Whitesnake, Foreigner, Billy Idol), Joe Travers (Zappa Plays Zappa, Duran Duran), and Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio).
Before he was famous, Bonham told his wife Pat, “I’m going to make it if you have faith in me. Don’t give up on me.”
Bonzo, even after your passing, many still haven’t given up on your music and your perpetual influence.
